Ranking The 32 Current NFL Head Coaches

*All coaching records and rankings are as of Friday 11/5/2021

We can all agree that coaching is a crucial component to any NFL organization, but it is a difficult position to evaluate from afar. Below I’ve ranked the 32 current NFL head coaches in an order that responds to the question: Who would you want as your NFL head coach to win as many games as possible over an extended period of time, regardless of the starting roster and rest of the coaching staff?

My personal criteria are rather unorthodox; while I do value coaches’ resumes and career accomplishments, I also value play-calling, 4th down decision-making, hiring of coordinators, and off-season roster construction. It’s not always easy to tell which NFL head coaches have a bigger say than others when it comes to making decisions in the off-season, so this ranking does depend on a few assumptions.
